Lines of Credit · Toronto, ON
Revolving credit you draw on, repay and reuse. Cheaper than a credit card for many borrowers, and usually variable-rate. In Toronto, the federal limits and Ontario's consumer protection rules both apply.

An instalment loan is closed-end: you take a fixed amount and repay it on a schedule, and when it is done the facility closes. A line of credit is open-end: the limit stays available, and you choose when to use it. That flexibility is the whole point, and it is also the risk — a facility that is always available is a facility that is easy to leave drawn.
Interest accrues daily on the outstanding balance, usually at a variable rate expressed as prime plus or minus a spread. On a typical line you may be offered interest-only payments, which keeps the monthly cost low and the balance outstanding. Paying only interest is a choice to extend the debt indefinitely; paying principal is what actually clears it.
An unsecured line of credit is granted on income and credit history alone. A secured line is backed by an asset — most often home equity — and carries a lower rate and usually a higher limit, at the cost of putting that asset at risk. The same trade appears in every secured product: better pricing, worse downside.
The initial limit reflects income, existing debts, credit history, and any security offered. Limits are reviewed, not fixed. A lender can reduce or suspend a line — for example if property values fall on a secured line, or if your credit profile deteriorates on an unsecured one. An unused limit is capacity, not a guarantee.
Choose a line of credit when the need is uncertain or recurring and you want to pay interest only on what you use. Choose an instalment loan when you have a defined amount and want a fixed payment with an end date, and when you would rather not have revolving capacity sitting there. Many households are better off with the discipline of a closed-end loan for a one-time expense, even at a slightly higher rate.

loanwolf.ca is not a lender. We do not make credit decisions, set rates, or guarantee approval. The lowest rates are only available to the most qualified applicants.
The federal floor applies everywhere: the criminal rate of interest is 35% per year, and licensed payday lending is capped at $14 per $100 advanced where the province operates a regime. Ontario licenses most non-bank lenders and may set a lower payday cap.
Practically, Toronto borrowers should compare credit unions alongside banks and online lenders: provincially regulated credit unions often weigh income, banking history and local ties rather than a score alone.
Lines are usually priced as a spread over the bank's prime rate, and the spread depends on your credit profile, income and whether the line is secured. Rates change with prime, so compare the spread rather than a single number.
Yes. An unused line of credit is usually counted in debt-service calculations at a percentage of the limit, and a drawn balance counts fully. Lenders assess total capacity, not just current balances.
Lenders can generally reduce or suspend a line of credit. That is one reason to avoid depending on a line as a permanent funding source.
No. loanwolf.ca is a loan matching and comparison service. We do not lend money, set interest rates, or make credit decisions. Your request is passed to a licensed lender or matching partner that assesses it against its own criteria.
It depends on the lender. Some use a soft inquiry that is not visible to other lenders, while others run a hard inquiry that can appear on your credit report. Ask the lender which it uses before you submit an application.
The lowest rates are only available to the most qualified applicants. Approval, rate and amount are decided by the lender and depend on your credit history, income, existing debts and province.
Yes. Using loanwolf.ca is free. We may earn a commission when you click through to a lender or partner. That does not change the cost to you.
The Criminal Code criminal rate of interest is 35% per year. Payday loans are a narrow exception: where a province has a licensed payday-lending regime, the federal payday lending regulations currently cap the cost of borrowing at $14 per $100 advanced.
Ask for the annual percentage rate (APR), the total cost of borrowing, the payment schedule, every fee and penalty, and whether the loan is secured. Get those numbers in writing.
